Edinburgh : A4e invaded on Anti Welfare Cuts Day of Action

Supporters of Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty invaded a4e’s Edinburgh office on 15 November to distribute leaflets urging the unemployed people attending the Flexible New Deal provider to stand up for their rights. 

No Room at the Bank for Citizens United

At around 11am on Wednesday the 8th of December, nine anti-cuts activists operating under the name Citizens United targeted their fourth bank.

The group slipped swiftly into the West Nile Street branch of HSBC and made an announcement that they were occupying the bank in protest to the poor

“ Whose streets!? Our streets!!!” - Glasgow students give cops the run around, closing scores of businesses as they went.

At Midday on the Thursday the 9th December, the day that Westminster was looking set to vote in new reforms to bring in hike university fees in England to an obscene £9000 a year, students in Glasgow came out to show solidarity and protest cuts to Scottish education spending and the austerity measures

Student anti-cuts protest snowballs

Tuesday saw another day of action against the cuts to higher education, and the wider cuts to the social sector. Hundered of students and workers marched from the occupied Appleton Tower in Edinburgh Uni to the Scottish Parliament to demand free education for all. Steps have been taken to join together with other struggle, with workers and the unemployed.

The anti cuts occupation of the Appleton Tower at Edinburgh University continues - and the occupiers aim to spread the struggle: "Come on down to the occupation!" they urge. As at Tuesday 30th November, non-students could normally enter the Appleton Tower building by George Square 8/9am - 6/7pm on weekdays - check the website for latest news.

Scottish Parliament Condemns "heartless" UK Border Agency

In an unusual show of cross-party unity, today, the Scottish Parliament gave unqualified support to the hundreds of Glasgow asylum-seekers whose lives have been turned upside down by the recent unilateral decision of the United Kingdom Border Agency to terminate its contract with Glasgow City Council.

New Anti Opencast Action Group Launched in South Lanarkshire & Public Meeting Dates Announced

STOP! Stop The Opencast Plans is a newly-formed action group in South Lanarkshire, set up to oppose Scottish Coal’s plans for new open cast mines in the Douglas and Nethan Valleys. STOP! will be hosting two public meetings in Douglas and Lesmahagow to rally opposition the the new plans, allowing local communities to have their say and to launch the action group.
