Free Hetherington Eviction and Reoccupation - Direct Action Gets Results!

On Tuesday university security and approximately 80 police, including a canine unit, police horses and a police helicopter circling overhead from about 10am evicted us from the Hetherington in a heavy handed operation lasting several hours.

Police attempt to ban Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! collapses
 
On 11 March, we learned that the case against a supporter of Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! had been dropped as it was about to go to trial. The Glasgow Defence Campaign today welcomes this as a significant victory for all those concerned with free speech and the right to political protest. The case demonstrated the need for open campaigning in order to assert our democratic rights in the face of state harassment. The activist is now pursuing a complaint against Strathclyde police and the officers concerned.

Strike! University lecturers to take industrial action over pension changes.

Last week members of the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) at over 60 universities across the UK voted to take strike action in defence of our pensions.

65%  voted to strike over the proposed changes while 82% voted for action short of a strike. If an agreement is not reached, the first strikes will take place next Thursday, the 17th of March, in Scotland with further action in Wales on the 18th,  Northern Ireland on the 21st and England on the 22nd. There will be a joint day of action on the 24th across the UK, which will cover all HE institutions, and p[ending a ballot to be announced on Monday, FE colleges as well. This would be the first time that joint action had been taken by FE and HE institutions since the merger of the AUT and NATFHE to form UCU.

Activists attacked at Mainshill Opencast as Huge Excavator is Occupied for over 4 hours

On Wednesday morning activists entered Scottish Coal's Mainshill Open Cast Coal Site in South Lanarkshire to disrupt coaling operations. As two activists managed to reach and scale a huge 260 tonne “prime mover” in the bottom of the pit, one of the two biggest machines on the site, other activists there to support them were brutally attacked by Scottish Coal employees and Trustcare Security.

 

Three Arrested as Scottish Coal's Ravenstruther Railhead Shut Down for a Fifth Time!

At 4:30am this morning the Ravenstruther Coal Terminal in South Lanarkshire was shut down with two people attached to a massive concrete barrel lock-on, closing the site to any coal lorry traffic, and the buldozer loading coal onto the sites conveyor was occupied.
