DON'T HATE THE MEDIA - BE THE MEDIA

Media

The event has been on the diaries for over six months and if previous patterns are followed we will have two or three satvans (BBC/STV/Sky) there with loads of stills people and a few text journalists. There will also be at least one crew covering the event as part of a programme (Frontline). Our own photos are required not so much for news on the day as for websites and later publications and archives, though we sometimes get shots that the mainstream people don’t and they want them.

There will likely be opportunity for interviews at Faslane, some live, and these are key for getting the message behind the event across. Reporters will find punters themselves to interview, which is great, but we also want to have capable interviewees speaking for the RBB. The international dimension will be significant and we hope to get that across, as well as the diversity of people who will be there.

Themes

Messages we want to get over:

1.      The war and WMD (and Scottish elections)

(depends on situation at time)

Hypocrisy over Iraq’s WMD and our own

SP has de facto (over Iraq) accepted that international themes are its concern

Trident is connected to lots of reserved issues (law; environment etc)

Don’t vote for a pro-war pro-Trident party or individual

2.      Basic case against Trident

What it is and what it does

Weapon of mass destruction –a civilian killer and destroyer of the environment

Breaches basic principles of international law

Dirty and dangerous

A suicidally crass response to security issues

No strategic sense in modern world

A terrible waste of human and material resources

3.      Call for real disarmament

Urgency – the longer we have it the more likely we’ll use it

Western nukes key part of the global bully network

Given an intransigent state citizens must take responsibility

4.      Growth of the anti-Trident movement

Growth in recent years of knowledge and understanding of what’s going on

Growing number of people willing to take responsibility

Scottish support for NVDA against Trident

5.      Widespread and diverse support-especially in Scotland

Due to campaign action Trident now on agenda at Holyrood

Great diversity in the kinds of people involved in campaign

6.      Knocking the myths

“The problem has gone away”

“The protesters are a bunch of young and ancient hippies”

“Deterrence works”

“The bomb has kept the peace for 50 years”

“The High Court has closed down all legal discussion of Trident”

7.      The “Civil War” in the courts

1800 arrests in last three and a half years

1650 days spent in jail

They can’t go on criminalising good citizenship

Wobblies

1.      Disruption to ordinary citizens, school kids.

How we work with police to minimise

Our aim to disrupt the base only

Proportionality

2.      Bad behaviour at the blockades (intimidation?)

Good record due to protesters and police

Police under oath in courts testify to peacefulness

If there are problems we need to take it on the chin and sort it

Proportionality

3.      Trying to lose thousands of people their jobs

Need for Scottish Exec to being now the post Trident economic planning for the area

Government has avoided responsibility for this – dodged the issue

Decommissioning will take many years and provide many jobs

In a new Scotland we want decent jobs for all our people –they should not be forced into

shady enterprises like Trident (parallel Afghanis and heroin)

4.      (Version 1!) Numbers are down on last year – the end of a short burst?

If you said just 2 years ago that (so many) would blockade Faslane . .

Always some disappointment that the whole of Scotland is not down here yet .

This is big in terms of impact on the base over 3 days

(version 2) Big numbers down here but are you achieving anything?

In one sense nothing yet . .

BUT we have got Trident on the public and political agenda

Beginning to engage people not normally involved in protest

The pressure (civil war in courts) is growing

Still to come –RBB media office guide!

ENDS

This is based on draft proposal put out for the workshop and the event while happening started looking some what more informal than may be implied by how it is set out below, especially with 'The Future of Indymedia Scotland' session. I believed it would more just general introduction, chit chat and getting to know each other. Well it turned out not quite that way :)
